Non-academic programs are available to help students decide on a career or education path, or prepare for employment. Programs last four to eight months and equip students with new skills, work experience and a college certificate.
Students walk away, at the end of their time in ETP, as college graduates with useful skills and experienes to continue their explorations in life.
Laura Friesen, ETP instructor and program chair
Post-secondary education can sometimes feel out of reach for many, says Laura Friesen, program chair and instructor. This is especially true for those who received extra support in high school or identify as experiencing barriers. However, ETP has no prerequisites. The first step is simply a conversation to determine if the students goals align with the program. From there, students can enroll in programs that offer real-world essential skills or gain sector-specific employment training, all tailored to their pace and needs, with continuous guidance and support. This happens in a very diverse community of students and staff that feels safe and joyful! Students walk away, at the end of their time in ETP, as college graduates with useful skills and experiences to continue their explorations in life.
Typically, throughout the academic year, there are around 48 ETP students in addition to 12 to 14 Pathways students.
ETP programs are flexible to meet each students interests, strengths and needs. Students explore opportunities and resources to pursue further learning, volunteering, and employment, adds instructor Mark Fournier. ETP learning labs support students to practice their skills and confidence, while contributing to the college community. We want to facilitate connection, belonging and growth not just for ETP students, but for the whole community.
Learn more about ETP programs and supports through these student journeys:
- An interest in gardening has evolved into a plan for a job in landscaping combined with long-term life goals. Evan also had the opportunity to learn to be more independent, while making new friends and being part of campus life.
- A sense of family along with a toolbox containing the skills to manage specific settings is helping Jacob explore future post-secondary options. Most of all, ETP programs have helped give him a stronger direction and sense of purpose in life.
- Exploring what she wants to do next is why Kyla enrolled in ETP but she has also grown in confidence and is happiest tending plants in the colleges greenhouse.
- Instructors watched Mik emerge from her cocoon before becoming a butterfly that soared. Mik developed confidence through ETP programs, made new friends and upgraded her English to get on her path to success.
- The education and confidence gained through ETP programs, English upgrading and diploma has put Nic on the path to a degree at UVic and, hopefully, a career as a filmmaker.
- Learning to advocate for herself and others has helped Tasha find her own path and grow in confidence.
- Post-secondary education was a scary idea for Kaleb but his time at 51勛圖app has taught him to believe in himself.
