The course, part of the Kinesiology program and built on an experiential and land-based learning platform, allowed the students to work with outdoor recreation organizations and community leaders, includingJesse Jubinville (Trail Director) and Andrew Mickleson (Hartland Trail Lead), board members of South Island Mountain Biking Society, to rebuild a section of washed out CRD trail at Mount Work (Hartland) Regional Park.

“The students learned trail building techniques, environmental sensitivity in trail building, and the importance of volunteering in outdoor venues to ensure their ongoing availability,” says Dr. Kai Riecken, Kinesiology Chair. “The students built a berm, helped install a water runoff trench, built a small rock retaining wall, and prepared the decommissioned old trail for replanting with native plant species.”
